What are you Doing Here – Bringer of Rest

Week Three, Day Four

March 21, 2019

There are seasons of our lives where it seems that we are living just to work. We work at work. We work at home. Next thing you know, we even feel stressed about the things that bring us excitement. Sometimes, we may even stay busy on purpose. We know what we are good at, we like to be needed, and when we keep moving we are in control. Right?

Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

There is an eternal implication to Jesus lightening our burdens. At the end of every day, we can rest knowing all of this is temporary. In the long-run, the only thing that matters is whether or not you choose Jesus. No matter how many times you get your ducks in a row, you can rest assured that they have minds of their own. Your Kingdom existence doesn't hinge on how many tasks you complete on your to-do list.

I think of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38-42. In this story, Jesus is at the home of Martha who was frantically preparing for this visit. We've all seen hostesses like this. I may or may not be one of them. Martha's sister Mary was spending time listening to Jesus while Martha was working hard. Naturally, she went to Jesus in frustration to which He responded, "But few things are needed - or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Jesus came to lighten these burdens. It helps to know that at the end of every day, there is not a chalk board with tally marks for each task you failed to complete. There is also no chalk board that is tallying up your indiscretions. There's a different kind of rest Jesus can bring. He already knows every thought that keeps you stirring. He already knows what keeps you from being still.

Thinking of Martha and Mary, if you were to live out that story right here and now, which personality would you be taking on? You decide.

Lord, you know what keeps us stirring. You know what keeps our minds busy even after we've settled in for the day. The thoughts that keep us busy and distract us. You are exactly what we need exactly when we need it. You refresh us daily and we don't know how we would move through our day without you guiding us. We don't deserve the rest you give us. Thank you for loving us so deeply. Thank you for knowing us. Amen.
