What's in a Name: Bread of Life
Week Six, Day Three
April 10, 2019
When Jesus called Himself the bread of life, He was foretelling that His sacrifice, which led to our salvation, would be the only sustenance we need. He is our portion, day after day.
Especially while fasting, understand Jesus as your portion. God is our portion when we are in need, and He is also our portion when we know we are falling short. The Lord's prayer asks that God give us this day our daily bread. This means that each day is full of new mercies and new provision. Each day, we can call on Him to sustain us in a way that worldly resources cannot. The same way that we must eat to survive, we must be filled with Jesus to have eternal life. He is our eternal sustenance
In John 6:35, Jesus says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
We can seek sustenance from resources that run out, or seek our daily bread. You decide.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your daily provision but, even more, thank you for your eternal provision. You meet every need we have, and I pray that we can reduce our worry over what we physically need and focus on the bigger picture of your sustaining salvation. You are the bread of life. We must be filled with you daily, as we would eat or drink God. Today, with every meal, let us remember what it feels like to have our stomachs hungry. In the same way when we don't have you we are spiritually starving. We love you and can't wait to encounter you this week. Amen.
