What's in a Name: The True Vine

Week Six, Day Two

April 9, 2019

Jesus doesn't just want to be connected to you - He wants you to grow and bear fruit.

John 15:5 says, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

But what does that mean? What's fruit? Fruit is the positive consequences of our decisions. It's joy and personal growth. Fruit is the spiritual characteristics that help us reflect Christ and represent Him better - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control. Finally, fruit grows from what God has harvested, as we are the extension of a flourishing Vine.

So what does it mean that without Him we bear no fruit? While eating grapes, have you ever noticed what happens to the ones that are disconnected? They typically go bad quickly. When we disconnect, it doesn't take long for us to wither. Without Jesus, we can't bear fruit on our own. We can't grow on our own. We can't get past sin on our own. We can't reach salvation on our own. We can't save others on our own. Last, we can't find salvation on our own.

Will you stay connected to the vine and bear fruit? You decide.

Heavenly Father, thank you for helping us to grow and bear fruit. Thank you for leading us to fulfillment, and thank you for your connection to our progress. You are not disconnected from us, and we are in awe of that. Lord, we know that we need you in every area of our lives. We love you and appreciate all that you are. In your mighty name we pray. Amen.
